Mention the names Rodgers and Hammerstein and almost everyone knows a bit about them. Rodgers and Hammerstein are two of musical theater’s best collaborators. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II are best known for the musicals, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The King and I, and Carousel.

Rodgers first partnered with Lorenz Hart. The partnership was a successful one, and they produced a number of Broadway works. Chief among these were Babes in Arms and A Connecticut Yankee. Hammerstein was also building a successful career on Broadway working with a number of composers. He collaborated with Jerome Kern to produce the well-known musical, Show Boat, in 1927.

The genesis of their first work together, Oklahoma!, resulted from both their writer partners turning them down on the same issue. They both wanted to turn the play Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs into a musical. Therefore, Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborated to produce the hit Oklahoma! in 1943. The pair started a whole new tradition in musical theatre with some of the changes they implemented in the musical. For one, prior to Oklahoma!, musicals had little or no plots and the songs didn’t tell a story. The show was so popular it broke records nearly every time it was performed. It was performed 2, 248 times. In 1944, the musical won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The songs that were performed in many of the duo’s musicals have lived on over the years. Timeless classics like “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “People Will Say We are In Love,” and the title song, “Oklahoma!” are still popular today.

Another of their award winning productions was South Pacific. This work, which addressed the dual issues of race and war, also won a Pulitzer Prize. Songs from South Pacific are also known internationally. Some of the better known ones are “Bali Ha’i,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair” and “Some Enchanted Evening.”

The Sound of Music is the best known of their productions. In 1959, it won a Tony award for best musical. Although many of their musicals were happy and cheerful, the duo also used their work to make social commentaries. The highly successful musical The King and I addressed the subjugation of women at the time. Based on the true story of an English woman, Anna Leonowens, The King and I addressed the cultural differences between countries as well. One of the most popular songs from this musical is “Getting To Know You.”

The last collaboration by Rodgers and Hammerstein was the Sound of Music, featuring Julie Andrews. This opened in 1959, just prior to the death of Hammerstein from cancer in August 1960. The musical, like The King and I, was based on a true story. It was about the life of a nun who lived in Austria during Nazi occupation.

Many of their musicals have been produced for television or film. Two of these were Cinderella and State Fair. Cinderella has so far had three incarnations on television, the latest being in 1997.

The music and musicals from Rodgers and Hammerstein have set the stage for future generations to come. Over 40 years later, their music still stirs the hearts of listeners and captivates audiences. Rodgers was the composer behind the music, and Hammerstein wrote lyrics for their productions.

The number of awards and accolades they earned together is a testament to their brilliance. They received 34 Tony awards, 15 Academy awards and two Grammy awards. Richard Rodgers died in 1979, but their songs will live on forever.

What are musical instruments?

In Africa, these are used to create music that has ritualistic value to them. They are used to create music for social and ceremonial functions. Percussion instruments and drums are considered to be the most popular types of musical instruments in Africa. Specifically, one of the most popular musical instruments in Africa is called the Mbira, a thumb piano that can be used in different ways by different cultures in Africa to serve a variety of purposes.

The turntable is not the only item of DJ equipment or sound recording equipment that has not been superseded by something completely different but has taken on the new technology and received a new lease of life.

Multitrack Recorders - The multitrack recorder was invented by Les Paul in the 1940’s. It enabled, for the first time, separate sounds to be recorded onto the same piece of tape at different times. Before the multitrack process everything was recorded at the same time. The technique became hugely popular in pop music and is still used today. It enabled groundbreaking records like The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beach Boy’s Pet Sounds to be made.

Microphones - Microphones convert sound into an electric signal that can then either be recorded and stored or amplified. The principle has remained largely unchanged although the means to record and amplify has had an impact.

Amplifiers - The ability to replicate sound with no loss of quality and in many cases an improvement in quality has come on leaps and bounds since the first electronic amplifiers. Companies like Fender, Orange and Roland have all improved the technology that has been driven in no small part by popular music and live performance.

 There is no doubt, Bob Marley is Reggae music’s ambassador spreading its gospel to the whole world and literally became the main reason for the popularity of Jamaica. Bob Marley’s outstanding and phenomenal efforts for the development of Jamaican music as we know it now carried the art to a higher level of spiritual and social force which appealed to extensive audiences form all over. Although he did not manage to land a number one hit in America, Bob Marley was inducted to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame giving credit to the legacy he left and the way he changed the cultural setting of the international music scene.

Reggae music is supported by Marley’s beliefs on the Rastafarian movement which is a religious sector who regarded Emperor Haile Selassi I from Ethiopia also known as Ras Tafari. The Emperor is said to be god who’ll be able to free blacks from total oppression and lead them back to a promised African homeland. Bob Marley delivered his music with conviction in a passionate way.

The unique signature of Reggae music with its hypnotic rhythms and enchanting tunes started to gain its popularity in the seventies. Bob Marley and his group The Wailers came out with albums such Natty Dread and Rastaman Vibration under Tuff Goff Records in Jamaica; music which were clear reflections of the hardships and life of a less fortunate Jamaican community also representing those oppressed all over the world. The uplifting spirit that can be felt when listening to reggae music was called “positive vibrations”. During troubled times, Bob Marley’s music was a powerful medium to spread wisdom, peace and the gospel during troubled times.

Jamaica is Bob Marley’s birthplace, having a white father and a black mother which made him a mixed race. During his teenage years in Trench Town, he grouped with Neville “Bunny” Livingston and Peter McIntosh to form the group trio Wailing Wailers later known as The Wailers, all of them born in the ghettos of Jamaica. The group was highly influenced by American radio listening to the famous R & B stars at that time such as ray Charles and Fats Domino amongst others. They become part of the Rastafarian movement and as Rastas, they had long hairs in dreadlocks and they smoked marijuana also known as ganja because it was a belief that in doing so, the spiritual path to enlightenment and a means of communication with the heavens is opened. Marijuana is considered as a sacred religious and healing herb by the Rastas.

During the sixties, The Wailers put out an album under some small Jamaican recording companies. Ska was the more popular Jamaican music then which was a mixture of New Orleans R & B and African rhythms. “Simmer Down” was the official first hit single of The Wailers. They continued to record more with the ska style while Jamaica was slowly shifting to the steadier and sensual beat of rock steady. A collaboration project with Lee Jerry, a producer, resulted in the Wailer’s significant song recordings which were “Duppy Conqueror” and “Soul Rebel”.

The Wailers became internationally famous when they worked with Chris Blackwell of Island Records. They had several more albums done which further catapulted the popularity of reggae music but Bob Marley had to separate ways with the two other Wailers. He continued to pursue hi musical career backed by a bigger band and some back-up singers and became the powerful soulful musical icon who represents the ways of the Rastafari.

Not long after, Redding invited Conley to Memphis to re-record the same song at Stax Studio. With Jim Stewart assuming production duties and produced the sessions with the help of Booker T as the arranger, the re-cut version of Im a Lonely Stranger has been released to the market in 1965 as the second single to be released by Jotis Studios.

In 1966 Conley released a second single under Jotis Studios entitled “Who’s Foolin’ Who”, was the fourth and last album that Jotis has released before it closed down. But the pair didnt stop there they continued to record under different labels at Reddings prodding he convinced Conley to sign up under Fame Studios in Alabama in July of 1966, where recorded two singles which are written by Dann Penn and in October 3, 1966 the hit song Take Me (Just As I Am) became a Top Fifty Billboard Pop item.

From then on, the singer and the producer became the best of friends, they became partners in the field of music industry. Redding acting as Conleys mentor, he encouraged the singer to hone his songwritting skills and create wonderful music together. And in January 20, he recorded Sweet Soul Music in Fame Studios and became a certified Gold hit on June 23, 1967. Sweet Soul Music hit the following charts Billboard #2; Billboard R&B #2; Cash Box #4; Cash Box R&B #1 and was proclaimed the top 10 record in the US, Canada, England, Netherlands and Philippines.

Conley instantly became famous worldwide with his hit single, he then became the number 11 male artist of Billboard in December 30, 1967. Sweet Soul Music became the most celebrated single of all time. The song pays tribute to all soul music icons such Sam Cooke, James Brown, Dan Cooke, Lou Rawls and Wilson Pickket all of which is the forefathers of Soul Music in America. Sweet Soul Music pays homemage to the music geniuses of Soul music that is why Sweet Soul Music has become a legendary and best loved Soul music genre of all times and has even prompted famous artists to sing the song again and include it in their albums.  This is a little bit, about how I became a small time music teacher. My own music teacher was a longhaired, short, stout guy named Timir. He taught music in our company sponsored classes on each Sunday. I was already playing around with my guitar for a few months before I gathered enough courage to go and have a peek into his class.

A lot of people surrounded him as it was one introduction class and he was saying The first thing you need to do is to buy a guitar … and he explained what make the guitar should be etc…

So I joined the class and got his default indifference in return. I learned later that he was indifferent to you by default until you showed up at least 5 times in a row. Later I learned the reason most people came with visions of rock starts jumping around or lover boys sitting with a girl playing a song on guitar.

However, when they find out that they can’t even play a chord or a succession of 5 notes decently after 3 weeks of practice, their dreams give in to reality and their guitars put for sale in our company website.

Music teaching can be quite interesting as I became more proficient; I found a few wide-eyed ‘fans’ surrounding me. It appears that I was the only student among a hundred or so who could play the guitar and also sing decently at the same time.

So I became a little, half-learned teacher in my own right. The girls particularly seem quite fascinated with anybody just trying to sing, let alone somebody who can carry a tune to some degree of dignity.

So soon, I was a music teacher, however small time. I like this type, as they give me instant credit of teaching some trick so well. There are some who are stuck in a rut; they just keep playing the same thing for months without realizing that they havent really progressed. Then there are those who wouldnt finish a tune halfway before jumping to another.

I have developed my own tastes for students for whom I am really willing to spend some effort. Of course, all girls qualify, but for filtering others, I am learning my own (real) music teachers tricks on avoiding some and focusing on others. I think an 80/20 principle applies well to music teaching as in any job, which requires a lot of patience and hard work.
